Turning the heads of passers-by can make you feel like a million bucks. Whether you’re wearing a new outfit or your makeup is on point, catching someone’s eye can boost your ego. And there’s no denying that long, luscious lashes have a big part to play.
And eyelash extension is a new trend taking the beauty world by storm. It involves attaching synthetic lashes to your natural ones, so you get the appearance of thicker, longer lashes. Here is why I stopped eyelash extensions.
I’ll admit, I was caught up in the hype. I tried it once, and my eyelashes were like BAM. I felt confident and enjoyed the attention I was getting. But after a few weeks, the cracks began to show. My once beautiful lashes were similar to a scene from a horror movie.
My introduction and how it all started?
Hey, I am Ashlyn, a girl with small and round eyes. By profession, I am a doctor, and being in the medical profession, we all have to look polished and presentable.
Let’s flashback to my college days, when I was a girl with glasses and skinny eyebrows. I would hide my face every time, and I was like, why can’t I have pretty eyes like my friends? This thought always struck me, and I was shallow in confidence those days.
One day, I was scrolling through my Facebook feed and saw an eyelash extensions advertisement. The first thought that came to my mind was – “finally, my prayers have been answered.” I was excited and couldn’t wait to get my hands on them.
I did internet research, watched a few YouTube videos, and finally decided to give it a shot. The moment of truth came when I was finally at Saloon with eyelash extensions in my hand.
How the time changed the results?
The first day, when I looked at myself in the mirror, I was like, wow! I was not the old Ashlyn anymore; I had become a new confident person. I was getting so many compliments and felt like a million bucks.
I was on cloud nine and started showing off my new lashes to everyone. I was so obsessed with them that I began to sleep with them, which is a big NO-NO. I know I should have listened to the lady at the salon, but who cares? I was in love with my new lashes.
And the time started to change the results, which I will show you in the next section.
What happened next?
Everything was fine; all seven days were full of parties and events. I was getting compliments from everyone and felt on top of the world.
I was at my friend’s house, and we were having a sleepover. I woke up in the middle of the night to use the washroom, and that’s when I realized something was wrong.
I switched the lights and was shocked to see my once beautiful lashes falling off. My heart sank into my stomach, and I was in complete disbelief. I was panicking, and my first thought was – “OMG, what am I going to do?”.
But that was not it, but a beginning. I went to Saloon without notifying my friends, thinking they would make fun of me.
The moment I reached there, the lady at the salon took one look at my lashes, and she was shocked. She asked me what had happened and I told her everything. She replaced my lashes and told me to take better care of them.
This was the final straw; my once beautiful lashes were sparse and barely there. Even I was surprised at how quickly they had deteriorated. I had no other choice but to take them off.
I returned to the salon, and the lady gently removed my lashes. But the things that she said next took me by surprise. She told me that I should have come sooner. She asked me to look at my lashes, and I was shocked to see redness in my eyes and my natural eyelash line was damaged.
What’s the story behind all the mess?
I decided to do a more profound research, and that’s when I realized I was not the only one facing this issue. There are so many girls out there who have had to go through the same thing.
The main reason behind all this mess is that we don’t take proper care of our lashes. We use harsh chemicals; we pull them off, sleep with them, and whatnot. We are so obsessed with them that we don’t realize we are damaging our natural lashes.
And once you damage your natural lashes, getting them back like before is next to impossible. So, it’s better to take off your extensions every night and let your natural eyelashes play a starring role for once.
Some truths about eyelash extensions
Now that I have shared my story with you let me tell you some hard-hitting truths about eyelash extensions.
Let me clear you, I am not against eyelash extensions, and I am not saying that you should never get them done. I am saying that you should be aware of the truths I will share with you.
They are not low-maintenance
Suppose you think you must apply for eyelash extensions, and it’s over. No, my dear, something big is cooking. Eyelash extensions are one of the most delicate things on your face and need a lot of TLC.
If you want to bypass the salon visits, you must take care of them at home. In my opinion that I concluded after listening to many experts, it is that it’s better to let the professionals do their job. Do regular touch-ups and clean them properly.
They are expensive
The initial investment might not be that much, but the upkeep will cost you more than your monthly rent. Just kidding, but seriously they are not cheap. You have to go for touch-ups every 4 to 6 weeks, and the saloon owners will be happy to see you because that means more money for them.
They are not natural.
This one is a no-brainer, but we all have this wrong notion that eyelash extensions will make our lashes look long and natural. But the truth is behind all the long and voluminous lashes; there is a ton of glue and fake lashes.
And you know what the worst part is? The synthetic material that makes the base of these fake lashes are made from acrylic, which is unsuitable for your skin.
They are damaging
I am using this term very lightly because I want to drive the point home. Eyelash extensions are incredibly damaging, you may not see the effects now, but in the long run, they will take a toll on your natural lashes.
I have seen so many girls who have to deal with the aftermath of these extensions. They must deal with bald spots, redness, itchiness, and even inflammation. So, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
How to stay away from all the drama?
If you want to avoid all the drama that I went through, then there are some things that you need to keep in mind.
- First and foremost, be a little picky and don’t hurry while choosing the salon. Do your research, read reviews, and asks around or your friends for recommendations.
- No matter how tired you are, never sleep with your extensions on. I know it’s tempting but resist the urge with all your might. If you have to sleep with extensions, ensure to have a silk pillowcase.
- Be extra careful in the morning when you leave your bed. We rush through our mornings, and in that process, we often damage our lashes.
- We often overlook cleaning when it comes to our beauty routine, but it’s the most crucial step. You can ignore all the other points I have made but not this one. Every night before going to bed, clean your lash line with an oil-free and waterproof makeup remover.
- Use a spoolie brush to remove mascara clumps and any product build-up.
- Don’t neglect your diet and lifestyle. A nutritious diet and a good night’s sleep can make a difference to your lashes.
Some safer eyelash extension options
If you are hell-bent on getting eyelash extensions, then at least go for the safer options. Some salons use formaldehyde-free adhesives and silk or mink lashes, which are a better option than synthetic ones.
Or you can go completely natural and apply eyelash serums and oils to enhance your lashes.
I hope this article helped you somehow, and now you know why I stopped eyelash extensions. I am not in favor that you should stop getting them entirely but at least be more vigilant and do your research before you take the plunge.
If you want a safer journey to longer lashes, go for the natural method. Trust me; you will make your lashes and your wallet very happy.
Note: I am not a medical professional, so the opinions and experiences I shared in this article are based on extensive research that I have done on the topic. Always consult your doctor or lash technician before making any decisions.
